Zholomiya Double Flute – double Ukrainian soprano pipe, chromatic

Zholomiya Double Flute – a Western Ukrainian musical instrument, a double flute with its own system of holes, fipples, and pipes. The Zholomiya mouthpiece is solid, with two independent channels and two whistles. The fingering parts (pipes) follow the standard scale of a classic chromatic flute with ten holes, except that one part (the left pipe) has 10 holes and the other (the right) has 4, tuned in unison (adjustable). The nominal range is 2 octaves across both pipes. Typically, musicians use 1.5 octaves, as playing above that on a double flute is challenging, but there is still room for creativity.
Since the zholomiya is a sectional instrument, it is easy to transport and clean. It is not sensitive to temperature changes and is made from wear-resistant materials (polypropylene for the fingering parts and biopolymer for the mouthpiece and bell). The instrument can be tuned half a tone lower if desired.
